The Section of Ecology is the oldest nucleus, founded by the Botanical Garden in 1773, then part of the Institute of Botany and the Italian Cryptogamic Laboratory, founded in 1869.

The library collects scientific-technological material with particular reference to the fields of engineering, architecture, mathematics and natural sciences. Overall, it has a heritage of about 150 thousand monographs (of which over 2000 ancient ones), 100 thousand years of periodicals and a few hundred resources on digital and magnetic media.
