Data Science

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science is a discipline that studies methods, techniques and algorithms for extracting knowledge from large amounts of structured and unstructured data. Data Science combines skills from mathematics, statistics and computer science to enable the implementation of information processing systems that can support intelligent and effective decisions in numerous application fields. In recent years this discipline has experienced an extraordinary boost thanks to important innovations both on the technological and methodological front. The development of techniques for "big data", and methods of artificial intelligence in general, and machine learning in particular, has in fact placed Data Science at the center of a technological revolution that will have great impact on our future.

The Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering is active in frontier research on numerous aspects of Data Science. In particular, several laboratories of the Department are engaged in the study of innovative theories and methods in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning and databases. Several research groups are active in the development of enabling technologies such as hardware and software architectures in general, and high performance computing in particular. Finally, there are numerous lines of research in which Data Science techniques are employed in different application domains including biomedical, multimedia, finance, robotics, remote sensing and many others.

The centrality of this discipline in the activities of the Department is witnessed by the recent activation of a homonymous course of studies ("Data Science" track) within the Master’s degree program in Computer Engineering.
